The site originally operated as a mining claim before Portland attorney Tom Orderman purchased the property in the early 1930s. Inspired by the growing popularity of the Rogue among fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts, Orderman hired local miners to construct the lodge that still welcomes visitors today.
Like many places along the Rogue, Black Bar comes with its own legends. Local stories tell of a miner named William Black, for whom the area was named. According to river lore, Black met an untimely end and was sent drifting downstream in his boat. Whether this story is a verifiable fact, or maybe a bit embellished, stories like these are part of what makes the Rogue feel larger than life.
Over time, Black Bar evolved from a private retreat into a fishing lodge. Anglers from across the country traveled into the canyon seeking steelhead and salmon, helping establish the Rogue as one of America's great fishing destinations.
