Rogue River Trail Maintainance

The BLM which manages the 23 miles of the Rogue River Trail from Grave Creek to Mule Creek is looking at making a few repairs and upgrades in the coming years.  Trail workers annually venture down the Rogue River Trail to do minor trail restoration and maintenance.  On the annual maintenance trips they mostly focus on the relativevly minor, but extremely important tasks of removing downed trees, trimming back brush, and working to make the trail navigable at the location of the Dulog Slide.
In the BLM section of the Rogue River Trail there are two hazards which could use some more extreme maintenance.  First, the section of trail at mile 13.8 where there is an annual slide at Dulog Creek.  The annual slide here makes passage at this section of trail extremely hazardous in the winter and spring months.  The BLM is currently proposing to re-route the trail around and above the Dulog slide.  They would move it to a stable point above the slide connecting the trail with the Kelsey Creek Pack trail.  The trail would return to the original trail approx. 1/4 mile downstream of the slide.
The second major fix the BLM is hoping to make in the near future is the replacement of the Bunker Creek Bridge.  A few years back engineers determined that the Bunker Creek Bridge was unsafe for travel and since then a temporary bridge has been constructed for use.  The BLM is hoping to replace the bridges with a 75 ft steel bridge which will need to be flown in via helicopter.
As with all actions in the Wild and Scenic Rogue River Wilderness the BLM is planning all restoration activities in a accordance with the River Management Plan and the Wild and Scenic Rivers land act.
The BLM is currently seeking, "comments, issues, and concerns you have that would help shape or further develop the project proposals."  You can send written comments to medford_mail@blm.gov and they would be mos helpful if received before Jan 27, 2010.
